EV charger grants in Wales 2026

If you live in Wales and want to install a home EV charger, you may be able to get up to £500 towards the cost. This page covers every grant currently available, who qualifies, and exactly where to apply. All information is current as of April 2026.

Last updated: April 2026

Important: All grants must be applied for before installation begins. You cannot claim retrospectively. Always use an OZEV-authorised installer — the grant is claimed on your behalf by the installer and deducted from your final bill.

Is there a Welsh Government EV charger grant?

There is currently no separate Welsh Government home charger grant that duplicates or adds to the UK-wide OZEV scheme. Welsh Government EV funding is directed primarily at public charging networks, local authorities, and community projects rather than individual home installations.

The primary grant available to residents in Wales is the UK-wide OZEV EV Chargepoint Grant, administered by the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles. This is the same scheme available in England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland.

Always check gov.wales transport and decarbonisation pages for any new Welsh Government funding rounds that may have opened since this page was last updated.

How to apply: step by step

1. Check your vehicle is eligible. Not all EVs qualify. Check the official OZEV list of eligible vehicles on GOV.UK before you do anything else.

2. Find an OZEV-authorised installer. The grant can only be claimed by an OZEV-authorised installer. Use the official list of authorised installers on GOV.UK to find one in Wales.

3. Get a quote. Get a written quote from your chosen installer before applying. You will need to include this with your application.

4. Apply online before installation starts. Go to the relevant grant page on GOV.UK (links above), create an account, and submit your application with the required documents. Do not allow installation to begin before you receive confirmation.

5. Wait for approval. OZEV will review your application. If approved, they will notify you and your installer. Installation can then begin.

6. Installer claims the grant. Once installation is complete, your installer submits the claim to OZEV with photos and your invoice. The grant is deducted from your final bill — you pay the remainder.

Wales planning note: Planning rules for EV charger installation in Wales operate under the Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) (Amendment) (Wales) Order 2019, which differs from the English 2015 Order. If your property is in a conservation area or is a listed building, check with your local planning authority before proceeding. Listed buildings in Wales require separate listed building consent under the Historic Environment (Wales) Act 2023.
